I am 58 years old and of course I know Zappa. I for some very strange reason thought most of his music is just a bit too weird for my taste. *Update * How oddly wrong I was! In just the last couple of days I have listened to a lot of his music and I am turning into a complete Zappa Freak... Great music!

His music grows on you. I hated Billy the Mountain when it came out in '72. I love it now. That shows that Zappa's music is eternal. I like the Playground Psychotic version the best. Especially around 20 minute mark where the keyboard starts the solo and Aynsley does a great job of drumming. Starts slow and increases with intensity. Aynsley drummed on this song too.

This material is totally NTM and I realize that I might need a few more listens to get past the fact that although it's performed at the highest possible level it's too twangy for my tastes and the 1st ever FZ material that I didn't either immediately love or eventually grow to appreciate deeply (w/a few rare exceptions). In other words, I think I need a minute to process this undeniably brilliant "country Frank" sound and see if I can get past my bias against this particular long-form country jam sound and appreciate it for the amazing work it represents. Everyone else commenting here seems to think it's totally Kool and the Gang. At present, it rubs me the wrong way so to speak and unlike other "rock" (I would never classify FZ as simply being a rock musician since he so clearly excelled in multiple genres and represents the best kind of musical savant) bands who dabbled in country including Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones (e.g. "Country Honk") and even "the other Frank" Frank Black did so in mostly palatable ways including the fine musicianship that always seem to go w/country but this particular song stikes me, at least initially, as long-play musical torture of a sort as it's fantastic in many ways including that slide guitar but it's just way too, like, Lynrd Skynrd for me. I mean, I heard "Freebird" so many times growing up and into adulthood it eventually caused a Clockwork Orange effect and now prompts instant strong dislike. Wow, what a pointless expression of an undoubtedly unpopular opinion. In closing, it should be noted that I am a massive Frank Zappa enthusiast whose father's massive vinyl collection introduced me to several essential Zappa albums at an early age and as time passed I was exposed to more and more Zappa including his symphonic stuff (and for the past 20 years, thanks to the Internet and my work for a now defunct music store - due to said Internet - have been exposed to more Zappa than I thought any one artist could possibly produce and am literally discovering new material every day thanks to The Zappa Family Trust, UMG and various sites especially UA-cam/YT channel hosts and still haven't experienced his entire body of work as there's so much material, offical and otherwise out there now, w/more being released every year thanks to TZFT, it's f-cking amazing) and have deeply appreciated, thrilled to and been energized and inspired by almost all of his prolific output which electrifies in every possible way from pure musical enjoyment to thoughtful (and even critically important) socio-political commentary to comedy to cultural homages and call-backs (e.g. "Cheapnis", "The Radio is Broken" etc.) and more. In short, FZ is perhaps the ultimate musical savant and I absolutely love his stuff. Country Frank might take a little getting used to, that's all. (End of pointless opinionated WTMI comment/rambling)

Haha, great idea, nice job, bizarre reprise 209+, that's a good one! I do the same in other ways when I find just a part of music very interesting! To be honest, this pedal steel came to my notice also when I heard this song first time and after. Thank you for honoring "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow's contribution to the Zappa music universe!

I play a Fender 400 set up like Pete's that he helped me with (although I can't get close to his touch, tone or talent) - and never knew there was an extended version of the solo. One of my favorite parts is Pete's "total chaos" transition into the next cut... Thanks SO much for posting this!

to be fair it's not a "real" extended version as in an artefact produced by FZ or anyone connected with him, but a strictly unauthorised fan edit by me. wouldn't want to steal valour by presenting it as official. wasn't Pete great though.

I understand the idea your thoughtful comment represents and agree w/the spirit of your intention. That being said, given enough time and consideration, even FZ's prolific and multi-genre output can indeed be classified in a number of meaningful ways for a number of purposes including edification, marketing and having fun coming up with new terms to describe a myriad of Zappa joints and tracks that already hold various labels and are classified as falling into one or more genres. But again, I get it, and the spirit of your thesis (that "pure" genius, perhaps as opposed to tainted genius(?), and the works of said genius defy easy classification, at least in terms of disciplines like music where opinion, personal taste and even caprice are involved. In a larger sense, genius can be classified in a number of ways as can said genius' output be it in the sciences or humanities (although in some cases less so in the later which I believe is part of your point). Excuse me, I'm just being a smartass for no good reason even if technically I've made solid assertions. Your statement and its meaning are well-intentioned and speak to the musical savant-level abilities and output of Zappa & his many phenomenal co-musicians and their amazing music defying easy classification as it's so very "uber". Apologies.

Dream come true. Bravo. In similar cheerful fashion and just as sweet are the keyboard solos of David Sinclair on the title track of Caravan's "In the Land of Grey and Pink" album. Just saying. On a personal note: Late 1993 or early 1994. I'd heard of Zappa's name, but none of his work. After he passed away, chanced upon "Peaches en Regalia" on _(strange, but)_ MTV. Surely, head over heels in love at first hearing. After "Hot Rats", "Waka/Jawaka" was my second Zappa album. As well stated by many viewers here, I wished Kleinow's solo would never end. It seems that in life without internet and less toxic congestion, people used to listen to music properly and spared time to discover, appreciate delicate matter. --Waving from Istanbul.
